Christopher Waters, Vines Magazine
The newly released Syrah from Lailey Vineyard carries the characteristic peppery and meaty character that defined previous vintages, alongside appealing blueberry and blackberry notes. This rich and polished wine shows the ripeness of the 2007 vintage while maintaining its balanced acidity and cool climate definition. While there's no harm in consuming young, you'll want to cellar this for a couple of years for best enjoyment.

David Lawrason, Winery to Home
This is a pretty, even-handed syrah that showcases lovely berry-plummy fruit with background pepper, smoked meat and other common syrah enhancements. Very even on the palate, firm but not austere with solid fruit and well integrated tannin. This is a wine that showcases fruit quality in this vintage. A couple of years in bottle could open it up. Best 2011 to 2014.

This wine delights from beginning to end. It's a striking dark plum colour with a big spicy nose that has layers of stewed fruit and musty barn. The fruit continues on the palate, along with a full body, very approachable tannins and a finish that keeps going and going. Winemaker Derek Barnett fashions his wines with the dinner table in mind; enjoy this with a medium-rare pepper steak with mushroom sauce.

Que Syrah? The only serious contender in the syrah/shiraz category is Lailey Vineyard 2007 Niagara River Syrah with its powerful smoky, tarry chocolate and mocha-laced cherry luxuriance from winemaker Derek Barnett.

The nose is smoky and blackberry with hints of floral. The palate delivers complexity with vanilla-caramel, smoky black fruit, a little cherry, some herbs, oakiness and a smoked meat quality that's very delicious.
