Riesling Dry Late Harvested
vinification / notes at bottling
reviews / awards aging notes
2002 harvested November 26, 2002 after a warm fall / the grapes were pressed and the juice was cold-settled / yeast was then introduced/ fermentation was cool and lasted 22 days / the wine was then racked from its lees and spent 10 months in tank prior to bottling

tasting notes at bottling

intense peach and ripe green apple on the nose / the palate shows very intense fruit with peach, green apple skin and some citric notes on the finish / the acidity is fresh and balanced and the flavours linger on a very long finish

estimated cellaring: 5 to 7 years

total production: 150 cases
4 out of 5 stars
This is an exciting approach to Niagara winemaking that will hopefully create more interest in the premium Riesling category and spawn many imitators. The late-harvested fruit has been fermented dry, which makes for a Riesling with impressive mouthfeel and concentration. The intensity of peach and citrus fruit and fresh acidity make for a refreshing wine that calls to mind serious and ageworthy Riesling reserves from Alsace. This wine could easily age 5-10 years and gain increasing complexity. That said, it's just the thing to add some zest to Easter dinner.

This is made in the style of a German Spatlese trocken – a dry wine from late picked grapes. Given the quite intense, exotic dried apricot, pine nuts and mossy nuances I suspect there was some botrytis or noble rot in the grapes. It’s medium-full bodied, initially creamy and smooth, then quite dry, hot and a bit resinous on the finish. Excellent length. Dry it with roasted game fowl.

Colour: medium straw
Nose: grapefruit, spicy
Taste: rich, spicy, grapefruit and rhubarb flavours - mouth-filling with good length and a long, dry finish. A hefty wine.
Drinkability: Hold (Long Term)
Tony Aspler, Winery to Home. July, 2004 Pricey for a Riesling but has the substance to warrant the price. Medium straw colour; spicy grapefruit bouquet; dry, full-bodied with a well-extracted spicy grapefruit and rhubarb flavour; good length with a long dry finish.
