Chardonnay Canadian Oak

aging notes
2001   4 out of 5 stars
A great gift for the wine lover who has everything. The Canadian oak adds pleasant anise and fennel notes to the coconut milk and tropical fruit flavours commonly found in Lailey Vineyards Chardonnay. The finish turns sweet with a hint of caramel flavour, which other tasters have referred to as being more maple syrup in character. Apart from being significant as a pioneering effort, this is an elegant and refined Chardonnay that rivals the best of Niagara.

Gold with interesting nuances of apple blossom, licorice, coconut butter and toasted biscuits. Lean but firm core. Drink now to 2007.

2002 tasting notes at bottling

Fermented and aged for eight months in Canadian oak barrels and bottled in mid July 2003. The nose displays pearand pineapple aromas with some herbal characters. The palate is creamy in texture with ripe fruit and coconut flavour. The finish is long, with a hint of bitterness.
Fennel and anise aromas from the oak merge with attractive caramel toffee and coconut aromas on the nose. That coconut and herbal/spice essence carries over onto the palate, which is buffered by green apple and pear fruit flavours. The wine is round and soft on the palate and finishes dry with a lingering herbal note. 4 out of 5 stars.

 2003 tasting notes at bottling

Delicate aromas of pineapple, toffee and a hint of pine. The palate is fresh with citrus and ripe yellow fruit flavours. This wine has great mouthfeel and the finish is crisp, lemony and spicy.

total production: 80 cases
estimated cellaring: 5 to 7 years
Some fig and sweet apple aromas suggesting fruit picked at the peak of ripeness. Almost full bodied, it is well structured and smartly balanced. Flavours include citrus, green apples, and honey. It finishes on an exciting spicy note followed by sweet coconut, possibly from the Canadian oak. Drink on its own or paired with Roast chicken and sage dressing. Pale gold with a bouquet that's both refined and reserved. Slowly, aromas of coconut, hazelnut and lemon custard emerge. Seems fragile at first, but its just the wine's fineness, delicacy, and graceful delivery of flavours. Drink now to 2009.
